FINALLY! It's October! It's the season of chill weather and the new fall anime lineup! I've been looking forward for the Kyoukai no Kanata (Beyond the Boundary) anime to begin ever since forever though I'm not sure if I just overhyped myself for it...BUT I truly wasn't disappointed! It's one of the few series that I'm super looking forward to this season.
First off the story is more Slice of Life with some Supernatural/Fantasy and is about a half-human/half-youmu highschooler who is immortal. He bumps into a glasses-wearing spirit warrior who he thought was going to jump off a building but ends up stabbing him with a sword made from her own blood. At this point I thought "WTF?!!!??" because not only was there a lot of narration, the viewer is pretty much drowned right smack in the middle of the situation. Normally, we'd have that one character who explains the whole thing. With KnK, the characters are already in their own zone, and the viewer is left to observe. I actually quite like it this way, even though it could be quite difficult to process if the scenario was any more complicated.
Characters....There isn't that much to comment about at this point but I like what I've seen so far. Akihito likes to break the fourth wall in some occasions and that's always cool. I'm kinda not digging Mirai at the moment. She seems like a cross between a moeblob and a strong-willed heroine which isn't necessarily bad but you can't really be both in the long run. I hope she grows into someone veritable in the future, and not the always clumsy moeblob that she is right now.
The animation was beautiful, as expected of KyoAni. I admit to not liking Free! that much but that doesn't take away the fact that the show was animated really well. The water/pool scenes in Free! were probably just practice for the blood-bending scenes as well as the park scene with the cherry blossoms. Another thing was the music. I honestly don't care for the OP but that ED was pretty catchy. The whole dynamic of the OP/EDs in regards to the show works so well! In it's entirety, it gave me a sort-of Harry Potter-esque feel, especially in the beginning.
There isn't much progression plot-wise (the whole episode greatly explains a backstory without literally spelling out the backstory and instead allowed for the characters' personalities to be the focus) and i'm not going to spoil it for whoever manages to bump into this blog but I'm fairly excited for the next episode already.
